今回の訪問について、日本語版と英語版の両方でご紹介します。

2026年3月8日から3月15日まで、札幌医科大学とカナダ・アルバータ大学との学術交流協定に基づく国際医学交流事業の一環として、カナダ・アルバータ州エドモントンにあるアルバータ大学を訪問する機会をいただきました。

今回の移動は、新千歳空港から成田空港を経由し、さらにバンクーバー国際空港を経て、エドモントン国際空港へ向かうルートでした。長時間の移動ではありましたが、現地に到着したときには、これから始まる滞在への期待がより大きくなりました。

【エドモントン国際空港：YEG】

実は、エドモントンを訪れるのは今回が初めてではなく、2025年8月にも学生の語学研修の引率で訪れていました。そのときは、やや肌寒さはあるものの過ごしやすい冷涼な気候で、その印象が強く残っていました。一方、今回の2026年3月の派遣では、到着時は少し暖かく感じたものの、日々の寒暖差が大きく、-20℃近くまで冷え込むこともあり、同じエドモントンでも季節によってまったく異なる表情を見せることを実感しました。

現地では、研究面だけでなく、人々のあたたかさや文化的な雰囲気にも触れることができました。タクシーで移動した際には、運転手の方が気さくに話しかけてくださることも多く、自然なやさしさを感じました。また、バスを降りる際に乗客が自然に "Thank you" と声をかけている様子もとても印象的で、日常の中に思いやりや礼儀が自然に根づいているように感じました。

【公共交通機関：Edmonton Transit Service (ETS)】

アルバータ大学は交通機関とのアクセスも良く、公共交通機関とほぼ直結しているため、とても移動しやすい環境でした。学ぶ場としての充実だけでなく、生活のしやすさという面でも魅力のある大学だと感じました。

まずは、アルバータ大学で今回訪れたキャンパスの雰囲気をご紹介します。広々とした建物や大学の看板を実際に見ることができ、現地を訪れた実感がより深まりました。

滞在中は、現地の3人の先生方とそれぞれミーティングを行いました。どの先生もとても親切で温かく迎えてくださり、終始和やかな雰囲気の中で意見交換をすることができました。

ミーティングでは、私の研究テーマについて紹介し、その内容についてディスカッションを行いました。研究の背景や考え方を共有する中で、文化や研究環境が異なっていても、共通して理解し合える部分や大切にしている視点があることを感じることができ、とても印象に残りました。異なる環境にいるからこそ得られる気づきも多く、私自身にとって大変学びの多い時間となりました。

また、今後の共同研究の可能性についても具体的に話し合いました。私が作成した共同研究のドラフトをもとに、どのように進めていくのがよいかを議論することができました。実際の進め方について前向きに意見交換ができたことで、今後につながる大きな一歩になったと感じています。

さらに別の先生とのミーティングでも、研究内容に対して貴重なご意見をいただき、新しい視点や今後の発展の可能性について考える良い機会になりました。

今回の訪問は、自分の研究を紹介するだけでなく、新しいつながりを築き、将来の共同研究につながる大切な経験になったと思います。3人の先生方から共同研究に関して前向きなお返事をいただくことができ、心より感謝しています。

先生方と今後も引き続きコミュニケーションを取りながら、共同研究を少しずつ進めていければと思います。

今回このような貴重な機会をいただきました先生方、そして関係者の皆さまに心より感謝申し上げます。この交流で得られた学びやつながりを、今後の研究にしっかりとつなげていきたいと思います。

From March 8 to March 15, 2026, I had the opportunity to visit the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, as part of Sapporo Medical University’s international medical exchange program, based on the academic exchange agreement between Sapporo Medical University and the University of Alberta.

My travel route was from New Chitose Airport to Narita Airport, then through Vancouver International Airport, and finally to Edmonton International Airport. Although it was a long journey, arriving there made me even more excited for the stay ahead.

This was actually not my first time visiting Edmonton. I had also visited in August 2025 as a faculty escort for a student language training program. At that time, the weather was slightly cool but comfortable, and that impression remained strongly with me. In contrast, during this visit in March 2026, although it felt a little warmer than I had expected when I first arrived, the temperature varied greatly from day to day and sometimes dropped to nearly -20°C. It was striking to experience how differently the same city can feel depending on the season.

During my stay, I was able to experience not only the academic environment but also the warmth of the local people and aspects of the local culture. When I traveled by taxi, the drivers often spoke to me in a friendly and welcoming way, and I could feel their natural kindness. I was also impressed by how passengers naturally said “Thank you” when getting off the bus. It made me feel that kindness, consideration, and politeness are deeply rooted in everyday life.

【Public Transportation: Edmonton Transit Service (ETS)】

The University of Alberta was also very easy to access, as it was closely connected to public transportation. I felt that it was not only an excellent place for learning and research, but also a very convenient and comfortable environment for daily life.

First, I would like to share a little of the atmosphere of the campus I visited at the University of Alberta. Seeing the spacious buildings and the university signage in person made the visit feel even more real.

During my stay, I had individual meetings with three faculty members. All of them were very kind and welcoming, and I was able to exchange ideas in a warm and relaxed atmosphere throughout.

In these meetings, I introduced my research topic and discussed it in depth. As we shared the background and perspectives behind our work, I was struck by how, even across different cultures and research environments, there were still important values and perspectives that we shared. That realization left a strong impression on me. At the same time, being in a different environment gave me many new insights, and the experience was highly meaningful for my own learning as well.

We also had concrete discussions about the possibility of future collaborative research. Based on the draft proposal for the collaboration that I had prepared, we were able to discuss how best to move the project forward. Being able to exchange ideas in a positive and practical way about the next steps felt like a very important step toward future collaboration.

In my meeting with another professor, I also received valuable feedback on my research, which gave me an opportunity to think about new perspectives and possible future directions.

This visit was not only an opportunity to introduce my research, but also a valuable experience in building new connections and opening the door to future collaborative work. I am truly grateful that all three professors responded positively regarding the possibility of collaboration.

I hope to stay in touch with the professors I had the opportunity to meet and gradually move this collaborative research forward.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the professors and everyone involved for giving me this valuable opportunity. I hope to carry forward the insights and connections I gained through this exchange and apply them to my future research.
